Seed - A Vital Input for Agricultural Crop Productivity

Seed is the decisive input for sustained agriculture production and is paramount for realizing the potential of all other inputs without which the investment on inputs such as fertilizer, water and pesticides will not pay desired dividends to the farmers. Use of quality seeds alone could increase productivity by 15-20% indicating the critical role of seed in agriculture. Modern agriculture, with its bias for technology and precision, demands that each and every seed should readily germinate and produce vigourous seedlings to ensure high yield. The seed quality traits including trueness to variety, physical purity, germination, vigour and health are very essential to obtain robust plant growth and yield.
The quality of seeds are fixed by many technologies adopted in the field as well as post-harvest period. Pre- and post-control test and seed germinability test are vary importantly followed to ensure the quality of the seeds. Government plays a major role in ensuring the quality of the seeds supplied to the farmers through various legislations. Also, seed industries and producers are playing pivotal role in regulating the quality of the seeds supplied to the stakeholders to obtain sustainability in agriculture.
